EVENT DESCRIPTION

Met While Incarserated, 78m, Mississauga, Catherine Legge

Met While Incarcerated is a feature documentary about US & THEM; it confronts our beliefs about crime & punishment, good & evil, forgiveness & redemption by accessing the deeply personal love stories of 3 prison wives seeking grace for the violent offenders they love.

THEY are not who you’d expect; a teacher, a military vet, and a hospital worker, all successful, strong, and accomplished women who’ve fallen for a man in prison who has committed a terrible crime. THEY put status, social acceptability, family and friendships on the line to love a man WE hate. Having committed no crime themselves, THEY face incredible stigma to fight for his second chance with US. The prison wives believe their offender has changed; you could say they’re betting their lives on it.

Journey is a suburban soccer mom and military veteran living in Georgia, who fell in love with Ben, a man who is in prison on attempted murder charges for trying to kill the last woman he loved. We follow her path from their prison wedding in Oregon to one year later, trying to win her conservative world over -- including her evangelical Christian family.

Angela is a beautiful, funny, middle school teacher from a nice family in New Orleans. Inspired by movies about social justice, she decided to write to a Death Row inmate who has been in solitary confinement in the infamous Angola Prison for 19 years. As her marriage dissolved their pen-pal friendship unexpectedly turned to love. Now she’s ready to marry a condemned murderer praying for a happy ending in the state justice left behind, Louisiana.

Brenda’s fought for everything she has in her life. She’s known Sonny since they were kids straight off the reservation. Amidst dysfunctional childhoods young love blossomed, but they parted ways; she went onto college, career, marriage and kids while he went to prison. Twenty-five years later and divorced, Brenda found Sonny, classified a “Dangerous Offender” he’s serving an indeterminate sentence in Portland, Oregon. After 6 years of marriage and fighting for his parole, we meet them preparing for homecoming, when he’ll walk out the gate after 31 years behind bars.

This film reveals that the distance between US and THEM isn’t as great as we thought. As Journey says, “My victims don’t make the headlines” because don’t we all want to believe that we’re more than the sum of our worst mistakes? And someone might love us despite them?
